In combination with training, one of the most important factors for increasing muscle mass and strength is to always be in a state of POSITIVE NITROGEN BALANCE* (PNB). It has been clearly documented that ingesting quality proteins and better yet, quality amino acids at each meal creates PNB. Therefore, in order to produce and maintain PNB, professional bodybuilders and strength athletes need to ingest as many as six meals per day, spaced two to three hours apart. They never allow themselves to go more than three hours without ingesting some form of protein or amino acids and risk going into a state of negative nitrogen balance, and possibly lose some hard earned muscle tissue.
The only time they cannot retain PNB (and at this time, they may actually lose small amounts of muscle tissue) is between their last meal at night and breakfast, which is while they sleep, generally about eight hours.
